When it comes to buying power wheelchairs (also known as electric wheelchair) there are several options to choose from. Consumers always consider between travel power wheelchairs, center wheel drive, folding power wheelchairs and heavy duty power wheelchairs. Several factors must be considered to determine the type of power wheelchair that will meet individual consumer needs.
When buying a power wheelchair consumers must consider the following:
1. How much do you weigh and what is the weight capacity of the power wheelchair you will be buying?
When buying a power wheelchair it is not advisable to buy a power wheelchair with a 300lb capacity if you weigh 300lbs or your weight is very close to 300lbs. For example, if you weigh 200lbs, a 250lb or 300lb weight capacity wheelchair could be appropriate for you. Based on your weight you can choose between a standard or a heavy duty power chairs.
2. Where do you plan on using the power wheelchair?
Consider whether you will be using it indoors, outdoors or both. There are several power wheelchairs available for indoor and outdoor use. Typically, most power chairs are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
3. How often do you plan on transporting the wheelchair?
If transporting a power wheelchair is important to you, it will be in your best interest to consider between a foldable or travel power wheelchair. Foldable and travel power wheelchairs such as the Merits EZ Go and Pride’s Go Chair weighs the least.
4. What seat size will be more comfortable for you?
Seat width goes a long way in determining how comfortable you will be in your new wheelchair. It is of utmost importance that you use a measuring guide when buying a power wheelchair or scooter.
The following are tips consumers should consider when buying a power wheelchair. Buying a power wheelchair is a big investment and given the cost of power wheelchairs, it is important for consumers to ensure they purchase the right equipment to avoid hassles and unwarranted restocking fees.

Power Wheelchairs and Obesity – is Your Chair Strong Enough?

America is getting fat. There is no way around it. The National Center for Health Statistics has been studying obesity in the United States for the past 40 years and their latest studies show that over 63% of all Americans are overweight. And 47% of those overweight Americans are termed clinically obese. With statistics like these it is no wonder that there has been increased demand for power wheelchairs that can support larger weights and individuals.
Most people don’t know it, but the average power wheelchair is only designed to hold someone who weighs a maximum of 250-300 pounds. There are over 3.8 million Americans who weigh more than that and growing. The majority of those weighing 300+ pounds need or will need a power wheelchair, which is no easy task when standard power wheelchairs are not up to the task.
When looking for a power wheelchair that can support someone who is overweight consumers need to look for the term “heavy duty” in the model or description. Heavy duty power wheelchairs can hold overweight or large individuals up to 500 pounds. The bad news is that heavy duty models cost more than standard models. The price increases quite a bit, especially if the standard heavy duty models are not enough.
Heavy duty power wheelchair’s need to have all of the same design characteristics of a standard power chair, but everything needs to be reinforced. The frame, axe, suspension, wheels, engine and battery all need to be strengthened. It is important that obese consumers only work with high quality power wheelchair manufacturers as a low-end product will either not be strong enough or will fail very quickly. The most common failure in heavy duty power wheelchairs is the motor. The motor in heavy duty power wheelchairs operates under so much more strain due to the added weight of the individual and the stronger wheelchair that it fails much more often than standard chairs.
One of the #1 choices for heavy duty power wheelchair users is the Jazzy line. Jazzy has two heavy duty options – the Jazzy 614HD for individuals up to 450 pounds and the Jazzy 1170 XL Plus Power for individuals up to 500 pounds. The Jazzy line is manufacturer by Pride Mobility which has seven separate wheelchair lines, so that they can provide a wheelchair tailored to each user’s needs. The alternative choice is Invacare’s Pronto M94 which is rated for up to 500 pounds as well. Invacare has been making medical products since 1885 and has an impeccable reputation within the mobility industry.

There are many organizations that offer free power wheelchairs and assistive devices such as hospital beds, lift chairs, walkers and other medical equipment. Here are a few:
MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association) accepts wheelchair donations, which they refurbish and offer at no cost to persons in need.
Orphaned Wheelchairs and The Wheelchair Foundation
The Wheelchair Foundation has partnered with Orphaned Wheelchairs to deliver wheelchairs to people in the United States. Orphaned Wheelchairs takes donations of new and used wheelchair equipment, identifies recipients in the USA, and distributes the wheelchair equipment to those in need. Included are free power wheelchairs
Special Kids Fund
Special Kids Fund is an alliance of schools, hospitals, and social service organizations that provide for the special needs of children with disabilities and at-risk youth. Through the Special Kids Fund Vehicles for the Disabled Program, donated wheelchair vans and vehicles are given to physically disabled persons who are not able to afford them. This includes traditional and powered wheelchairs.
The Senior Wheels USA Program
This program makes available power (electric) wheelchairs to seniors (age 65 and up) and the permanently disabled at no cost to the recipient, if they qualify. Power wheelchairs are provided to those who cannot walk and cannot self-propel a manual wheelchair, and who meet the additional guidelines of the program.
The Wheelchair Project
The site offers an inventory list of all available wheelchairs – both manual and powered. They do not put a price on the chairs, only ask that you either pick up or arrange for delivery.
If you plan on getting a power wheelchair through Medicare or your own private insurance, it is important to note that Medicare and most private insurers will cover between 50% and 80% of the allowable price for power chairs for those who are eligible. The amount that your insurance company pays will depend in part on the type of mobility chair you require and the state in which you live. Be sure to do your homework, and beware of anyone who knocks on your door or approaches you on the street and offers to take you to a physician to get a free power wheelchair or scooter. Legitimate providers do not do that. Instead, they prefer to work with your existing physician. Avoid anyone who will not allow you to use your own physician and insists that you go to theirs.
It is possible to find free power wheelchairs if you are realistic about what is available. Regaining your mobility and independence is definitely worth the research!

If you go out to buy an electric wheelchair at your local electric wheelchair dealer or browse the web for an online electric wheelchair dealer the first thing you have to know is that you have to take your time. The dealers offer a wide range of selection; also an electric wheelchair dealer can offer different upgrades to your chair on wheels.
If you’re looking for an electric wheelchair dealer that offers used electric wheelchairs you should have no problem finding one. Power chair Sellers that sell used wheelchairs come in great numbers. First check out the business and question about their past sales. Find out if the company has made any sales in the past with similar demands as yours. Ask the salesman what kind of warranty he offers. Ask the deaker if you’re going to need any permits and if so who is in charge of getting them.
Find out if the electric wheelchair dealer specializes in the wheelchair you’re interested. Ask the salesman if an estimate of the purchase will be provided. Many companies have had past problems with the sales and warranty of the equipment. An electric wheelchair salesman will ask you several questions regarding your needs.
The salesmans questions should tell you how interested he is in you. If he or she doesn’t show interest in your needs than that’s not the company you’ll want to go with. So you have to go to the next place and ask him or her the same questions. Eventually you’ll narrow your searches to one electric wheelchair dealer.
But you shouldn’t make a jumpy decision. Research the company and find credentials and past sales. Verify the business’s insurance and licenses. If they comes out clean and you feel comfortable with his products and workers call the company and ask him to give the price and the warranty agreement of your desired product. Companies will sometime try to sell you used products.
When you go to any store or warehouse check out there products. Wheelchairs have problems but most salesman will want to hide that. Many Producers provide you with faulty equipment and you’ll find out later about the problems. Although they should provide warranty it’s best to be careful in choosing.
Ask your provider to provide you with quarter-annual service, because you’ll find your self with faulty electric wheelchair battery. Wheel chair providers are all over the place so go out and find the perfect one for you.

Wheelchair wheels pay a dual role in the operation of a wheelchair; they both act as shock absorbers both increasing the comfort of the wheelchair user, and decreasing the stress on the wheelchair to reduce the level of future maintenance it will need.
Many wheelchair users, however, see their wheelchair wheels as one of their chair’s most important stylistic features, decorating them with designer hand rims and spoke guards. This is in spite of the fact than most wheelchair wheels are constructed of gray rubber, which has been treated to prevent it from scuffing floor finishes. And many of them share their pneumatic construction with ordinary bicycles.
Pneumatic Tires
Those wheelchair wheels which contain inflatable tubes like those found in bicycles cushion the wheelchairs’ users’ rides and enable the wheelchairs to maneuver through past closely situated obstacles and tight areas. But pneumatic tires puncture easily on broken glass, nails, or even sharp stones. This is especially true for motorized wheelchairs, which are heavier than manual ones. Having a flat tire with no spare when on a solitary outing is no wheelchair user’s idea of a good time.
Solid Tires
Wheelchair tires of solid rubber are a terrific alternative to pneumatically clad wheelchair wheels, because their rubber is sturdy enough to handle event the roughest terrain. Solid rubber will not wear out and need replacing as quickly as pneumatic tires, and unlike the pneumatic tires, rarely become deflated.
But, like all good things, solid rubber does have it s flaws; it will, for instance, let you experience every jarring jolt when you are traveling on unpaved terrain. This discomfort, however, is insignificant given that those wheelchair users who have pneumatic tires who and use their wheelchairs frequently normally have to replace their wheelchair wheels every two to three months.
There has been a recent advance in wheelchair wheel technology, which offers users both a comfortable ride and amore durable tire. Some solid rubber tires are designed to hold a rubber insert which substitutes for the pneumatic tube. This new tire needs no inflating, meaning that it will never become deflated.
Disabled people who have manually operated wheelchairs have reported that this new solid rubber tire with the tube insert provides them with a more cushioned ride, and motorized wheelchair users have also made favorable comments about it. If you are a wheelchair user who is tired of jarring rides and flat tires, this new tire may be the answer for which you’ve been waiting.
People who are able to get out and about might want to buy a collapsible transport wheel chair which can be used for excursions and will fit in a car’s trunk. The transport wheel chair must either be pushed, or maneuvered by the user’s feet. Power wheelchairs are not collapsible, and people who use them usually travel by van with specially designed wheel chair lifts.
Before you buy a wheel chair, measure all the tight spaces in the user’s environment through which it will have to fit; widen the necessary doorway and move what furniture you need to.

Standard power wheelchairs are one of the most purchased types of electric wheelchairs and consist of center wheel and rear wheel drive. It is one of the most maneuverable types of power wheelchair on the market and can accommodate items such as elevating legrest and power elevating seat.
Standard power wheelchairs are perfect for indoor and outdoor use and handles rough terrain very well. A center drive standard wheelchair are designed to maneuver well in confined spaces and requires less space to maneuver when compared to rear wheel drive or foldable power wheelchairs. Its standard captain and high back seat with headrest provides a comfortable ride for the end user. The captain seat available with most power wheelchairs also features a semi-reclining back and a headrest for extra comfort. Now the most important question asked by consumers is “what is a captain’s seat”. A captain’s seat is very much similar to seats found in automobiles.
This type of electric wheelchair (rear and center drivel) features flip up armrest, a weight capacity of up to 300lbs, a speed and battery range of up to 7mph and 15miles, respectively. When reaching counter tops is a primary concern, a standard rear or center drive power wheelchair with power elevating seat is an option. A power elevating seat comes standard on some power chairs but is optional on others.
When compared to travel and folding power wheelchairs, a standard power wheelchair is heavy and requires a power chair or scooter lift into a car or SUV. However, two people can easily disassemble this wheelchair for transporting. This is simply achieved by separating the seat from the base.

Wheelchairs have been around since the 16th century, but a carved image has been found in stone as far back as the 6th century! The first recorded use, in the late 1500′s, was a chair mounted on wheels, which could also fold out into a bed. A short time after, one was created for King Philip II of Spain and was made of wood, leather and iron. It even had armrests, a cushioned or quilted backrest, and the back panel and foot & leg rests could be adjusted. The modern wheelchair though, is not far from its 18th century predecessor. It was built with 2 large front wheels and one small wheel in the back. As the design progressed, wheelchairs were made with wood and wicker. The first folding wheelchair was made using steel and designed by a duo whose one member had been crippled in a mining accident. We still see these today, although they are lighter, hardier and easier to manipulate.
The folding wheelchair was a great leap in assisted-mobility design, but not all disabled individuals were able to use them. After WW2, many surviving soldiers suffered from spinal injury, which meant that quite a number of them were unable to maneuver their wheelchairs on their own. With the cooperative efforts of engineers, soldiers and war veterans who suffered such a plight, the first motorized wheelchair was invented. This was considered a first for engineered rehabilitation!
Today there are many versions of the wheelchair, both motorized and manual; built for different uses, terrains and physical requirements. To make it more versatile, aluminium, titanium or even carbon fiber is used instead of iron or steel. Also available are posture-molded designs, athletic-influenced designs, even designs that allow the user to manipulate over curbs, small objects or uneven terrain.
The invention and innovative progression of the wheelchair have paved the way for more sophisticated forms of independent aided-mobility, such as the standing wheelchair for use in a sitting or standing position; the bariatric wheelchair for individuals weighing over 250 pounds; the knee scooter for those who suffer from leg injuries below the knee; athletic powerchairs for various sports, including basketball and soccer; and recently the handcycle, related to the wheelchair and modeled after the mountain bike.
But during all these advancements with the wheelchair, another device was given life in the 60′s and continues to progress and improve in design today. It is the motorized scooter. Although it is not as flexible as the wheelchair: it cannot be pulled up to a table, it cannot be folded and stowed away and it cannot be used by individuals who are unable to stand up and walk on their own.
Although not as flexible in usage as the wheelchair, it allows the user to travel faster and at longer distances, for longer periods. It can travel over all kinds of terrain – even over muddy, bumpy farmland! One such mobility vehicle is the TGA Breeze. Designed with the latest electronic control options, an adjustable seat, all-wheel adjustable suspension – even while on the move, brakes, illuminating and indicator lights. It is elevated enough for ground clearance, but not too high to make it difficult to get into. It runs on battery power and is easy to charge. It can travel at speeds of up to 8mph. Front and rear baskets are standard. The scooter is built for absolute safety and ease of maneuverability. Users can have the option of left-hand geared controls, along with the regular right-hand version.
So if an individual requires assistance in getting around, a Mobility Scooters is a viable option if walking short distances or standing alone is not a problem. It may not be as flexible as a wheelchair as it could be considered a little one-man car, but it is safer and more comfortable than a motorized wheelchair, and more fun to ride around!

A fold up wheelchair is used for a bed-ridden patient. It comprises mainly of a chair which has a back rest and the main body of the chair can be folded upward and downward. The chair has some frames at the back and the rear legs are attached and connected to the frame. The legs can be rotated to push the frame forward and backward.
The ultralight folding wheelchair can be easily transported behind the seat of your car. It has swing-away leg rests. It offers all the options of a rigid wheelchair with the necessary benefit of being able to fold up without any problems on the rear seat of your car.
The folding feature of an electric wheelchair is special, as the electric wheelchair carries the unit with the motor and the batteries. This makes the whole wheelchair heavier and more vulnerable to damage during travel. Folding is not as easy as a standard wheelchair, even though it has been simplified in the newer models.
The invention has passed through several stages till the new version, which has been patented. In the conventional form of the fold up wheelchair, the chair was in the center of the frame and the rear leg of the chair was connected to the frame, which could rotate like a screw shaft backward and forward. In the next stage, the side frames were connected and a motor was attached which moved the chair to a horizontal position.
In this way the patient could be transferred from the bed to the wheelchair without much complication. Then the back of the chair went up again and the patient could be moved to the bath or the toilet, like moving him in a normal ultra light folding wheelchair. He could be given a bath on the wheel chair, but the screw shafts started rusting due to the hot water.
The way the ultralight folding wheelchair folds is different with each model. Sometimes it folds into two, sometimes during folding the wheels are quickly released and the armrests are flipped back. If the armrests are detachable, the height can be adjusted easily and hence can be detached during folding too.
The fold up wheelchair also helps the patient to use the toilet by having a seat frame attached to the fold-up wheelchair and a toilet hole below it, which can be opened and closed also with the help of a motor.
Modern wheelchairs, especially motorized power wheelchairs have been designed in such a manner as to provide solutions for various needs for different kinds of disabled persons. With an ongoing evolution in modern society taking place, there is also a corresponding evolution taking place in the field of wheelchairs. The modern motorized power wheelchair is a good example of such evolution and it has in fact, done a lot to improve the life of many a disabled person.

Whether you are dealing with arthritis, osteoporosis, or other degenerative bone and joint conditions, you have probably broached the subject of mobility. Obviously, it will still be important for you to move around, but it will get more and more difficult over time. That is why many companies have developed electric wheelchairs, which not only let you get around, but make it more convenient too.
These are very different from the traditional manual wheelchairs with the oversized wheels and the wide bulky frames. They required you to use your own strength and force to turn those wheels, and thus create the momentum needed to move. It was usually recommended that you let someone else push you, though, since these chairs were not very easy control in many regards.
While they did not handle turns and corners very well, they were not exactly all that attractive either. Obviously, though, the original models were designed for function more than anything, especially they were still only commonly used in hospitals and nursing homes. Only after they became more accessible and affordable were they brought into domestic homes for everyday use.
When electronics were added to wheel chairs, it really started to change the way people regarded them. It gave people with greater disabilities more opportunity for personal mobility which is not only convenient but very rewarding and fulfilling to those who once had to solely rely on others.
Perhaps their rise in popularity is the reason why manufacturers began to make them more comfortable too. The seats became more resembling of automobile bucket seats along with the appropriate head rests and even similar fabric and stitching. Even arms were added, which were necessary to comfortably control the joystick or other conveniently placed controls.
If you are considering an item like this for yourself or a loved one, you simply want to remember two words: mobility and comfort. The primary goal, obviously, is to be able to move freely, but you also want to be as comfortable as possible, especially if this is where you’ll spend most of your time.

Simply log onto the Internet and run a search and you will easily find a handful of company websites all offering savings on the best chairs in the country. This makes it not only efficient for you to find the perfect chair, but with competition being so healthy, the prices will likely be quite attractive too.
